Register Here: Louisiana Legislative Updates 2024

The 2024 regular legislative session in Louisiana included a great deal of new laws that will impact the professional practice of school psychologists, educators, and administrators alike. This year's legislative session made significant changes to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness) programs and instruction, communication related to LGBTQ+ populations and systemic oppression, the screening, intervention, and assessment of numeracy, literacy, and dyslexia and created a school-choice initiative designed to divert funds from public entities to participating private and parochial schools. This session will review these and other related educational legislation, discuss implications to practice, and provide guidance to participants in how to navigate these new laws in their everyday work.

Presenter: Jamie Raborn, PhD, NCSP, LSPA Government Relations Co-Chairs

Objectives

In this session, participants will:

1. Review laws passed in 2024 that change policies and procedures in public K-12 institutions.
2. Discuss subsequent implications to professional practice.
3. Learn how to navigate ethical obligations when changes to state laws contradict them.
4. Review grassroots advocacy opportunities professionals may engage in to mitigate the impact of future legislative efforts to supersede the autonomy of school districts and employees to best serve our students and communities.
