Spring Lunch & Learn Webinar Series: Part 3 of 3

While the age of transition according to IDEA 2004 states we should begin preparing students for the transition to adulthood at age 15, the work can begin well before that age. School psychologists and other IEP team members can promote student success by allowing opportunities for decision making, helping them to understand their rights and various pathways, and explicitly teaching the skills needed to become a self-determined individual. The National Center for Learning Disabilities stated in their 2017 report on education, "Though abilities associated with self-determination, such as goal setting, problem solving, and decision making are essential to future success, they are often trivialized as soft skills and regulated to the backburner of academic curricula." (NCLD, 2017) This presentation promotes the use of free and low cost tools that can be utilized in the course of evaluations and IEP services to promote this work as well as an overview of the comparison between K-12 supports and post-secondary supports through Section 504.
